Why Fremont water is hard, and what it does
ACWD’s blend, the grains-per-gallon number, and the fixtures and heaters it quietly shortens.

If the kettle has a white crust and the shower glass never looks clean, that is hardness, and in Fremont it is normal.
Where the water comes from
Alameda County Water District blends three sources: the State Water Project through the South Bay Aqueduct, local groundwater from the Niles Cone, and San Francisco’s Hetch Hetchy supply. Hetch Hetchy is very soft. The groundwater is not. The blend changes through the year, so hardness in Fremont moves roughly between 7 and 14 grains per gallon, with most of the city sitting around 8 to 12. Anything over 7 is “hard”.
What it does in the house
- Tank water heaters: sediment settles on the bottom, insulates the burner from the water, and the tank runs hotter and longer. That is the rumble you hear. It roughly halves the tank’s life if it is never drained.
- Tankless heaters: scale coats the heat exchanger. Output drops, the unit throws an error code, and a flush that should be annual becomes a repair.
- Faucets and shower valves: cartridges stiffen and drip. Aerators clog and the stream goes sideways.
- Dishwasher and washer: inlet screens and solenoids scale up; glasses come out cloudy.
What helps, in order of effort
- Drain the tank heater once a year, or let us do it when we are there for anything else. Ten minutes.
- Flush the tankless once a year through its isolation valves with a pump and vinegar. If your unit has no isolation valves, that is the first thing to add.
- A whole-house sediment filter catches grit, not hardness, but keeps aerators and valves clean.
- A softener or a scale-reduction unit on the cold line feeding the heater. A softener is the only thing that actually removes hardness; it needs salt and a drain. Template-assisted crystallization units need neither and reduce scale without removing minerals; they are a good fit for most Fremont houses.
The honest bit
You do not need a softener to live in Fremont. You do need to drain or flush your heater once a year, and almost nobody does. Book it with any other visit and we will put a date on the tank.
