Backup power
How we do it.
Public Safety Power Shutoffs reach the foothills more years than not, and a dropped line on Mathilda takes a few blocks out every winter. Backup power is the difference between a dark evening and a normal one.
Options
- Battery. Tesla Powerwall 3 or Enphase IQ, 13 kWh and up, with a gateway that islands the house in milliseconds. Pairs with solar; works without it.
- Generator inlet. A 30 A or 50 A inlet and a manual transfer switch for a portable generator. The cheapest way to keep the fridge, the furnace fan and the lights on.
- Standby generator. A natural-gas unit with an automatic transfer switch, for homes that cannot be without power at all.
What we size for
On the walk we list what must stay on (refrigerator, furnace, well pump, medical equipment, the garage door) and what can wait. The critical-loads panel is built from that list, so the battery lasts the night.

Next: a site walk.
