Start with the right questions.
Walk the garden in morning and afternoon light before choosing plants. Draw the seating areas first, then connect them with paths. Use a small number of repeated plant groups so the garden reads as a whole.
Put the details in the plan.
The first year is establishment. Check soil moisture before changing irrigation, leave room for mature plants, and ask for a seasonal pruning calendar.
Bring it to the site walk.
Bring photographs, a list of what is not working today and any constraints on access or timing. The aim of the first visit is to turn those observations into a scope you can understand.
