Lighting an Eichler without wrecking the ceiling

No attic, a tongue-and-groove ceiling and radiant heat in the slab. Eichlers in Fairbrae, Fairwood and the Manors need a different lighting approach.

A finished living room at night with cove lighting, dimmed recessed lights and a lit garden beyond the glass.

The constraints

The ceiling is the roof. There is no attic to fish cable through and the slab has copper radiant pipes you must not drill. Every wire has to travel along the beams, above the roof deck or in a surface channel.

What works

Shallow-recess LED fixtures in a slim surface channel painted to match the beams, wall washers mounted on the beams, and floor-level outlets fed from the exterior walls. Cove lighting along the top of a wall is the Eichler trick: it lights the wood ceiling and makes the room feel taller.

What to avoid

Standard 6-inch cans. They need five inches of depth you do not have, and cutting into the roof deck invites leaks.

Our approach

We mock up two fixtures on a beam, run them from a temporary cord after dark, and let you choose the beam angle and color temperature before any hole is cut.
